I was surprised at some of the other reviewers who expected this to be a book. It is a 6-foot long by 12-inch fold out map of the inside passage from Glacier Bay to Seattle. It does have some basic facts and information on the reverse side as well as basic road maps of most of the towns along the passage. I’m looking forward to tracking my entire cruise route on this relatively detailed map. If you’re looking for more detail, I think you’d have to get a topo or a nautical map.

This guide book contains general information on Alaska, such as its history and itineraries. There are sections on seeing Alaska by cruise ships and then on the wilderness, southeast Alaska, Anchorage, South Central, Denali National Park, the interior and the bush. The maps are good, even the map of Anchorage might be all you need. A separate pull out map of the state is included. It does a good job on including the different ways to see Alaska – the roads, railways and by water. Safety tips, especially concerning bear and moose are excellent.
There are some surprising omissions. In the section on cruise ships and the advice it gives, nothing is suggested that you should try to book a port side room if you are southbound and a starboard room if going north. You are then on the coast side and able to see the sights while in your room, especially if you have a veranda cabin. This is an added bonus, if it fits in your budget, because as you cruise glaciers you do not have to struggle for a rail position and then stand the whole time. In some cities one wonders why some very popular sights are left out. In Ketchikan, the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is rated, by the Travel Channel as one of the top 10 sights to see in Alaska and yet there is no mention of it. The pictures are nice, but again for a place that, even the guidebook says you need to pack rain gear, all the skies are blue and clear. There is very little mentioned that most travelers do not get to see Mt. Denali on most days because of cloudy or misty skies. Even on a seemingly clear day it can be `invisible’. There are safety tips about hiring guides, but no advice on the reliable ways to do this. In general this is a good introduction to Alaska today, including its politics and the economy and many of the outdoor adventures. This is aimed mainly at those traveling by means other than cruise ships.

A foot wide and eleven feet tall IS a weird shape for a chart, but I find it to be very enjoyable because it shows the whole inside passage in detail. Where else can you find something like this? Let’s hope this map stays around. It’s a great concept and allows one a greater appreciation of the region.

We hope to travel to Alaska this upcoming summer. The information has been very helpful so far. I love how it has divided Alaska into different regions and does a great job of suggesting what to do in each region.

The chart is good for general information contained in one document. The quality of construction is excellent, allowing opening and closing many times without any tearing. As many of the cruies ships go further north of the present chart, the chart would be of greater value if it were extended to the Seward AK area. The course on the chart was a bit confusing as the ship I was on used a different route.
